The RX-3 is on this site because of what it did to the Skyline. In 1971 a rotary-powered Mazda took the Japanese Grand Prix touring car category off Nissan and ended a 49-race GT-R winning streak — a result the rotary faithful have not stopped mentioning in the fifty-odd years since.
It deserves the noise. Mazda had to prove the rotary engine could do more than sip fuel in a showroom, and the RX-3 is where that argument was won on track rather than in a brochure.
