The first M3 arrived in 1986 for the least glamorous reason there is: BMW needed to build enough road cars to be allowed to race the E30 in Group A. What came out of that rule was the most successful touring car of its era, with box arches that exist for cooling and downforce rather than for the look of the thing.
The artwork is a front-on portrait of the E30, picking out the twin-kidney grille, the four round headlights and the front splitter’s brake ducts from the factory Motorsport kit.
